SUMMARY: An English Language Development (ELD) Aide provides individualized adult support to a student or group of students under the direction of a certified ESL teacher and general supervision of the building principal and program supervisor of ELD. An ELD Aide provides language support services, facilitating student access to educational materials across multiple disciplines. An ELD Aide exhibits strong interpersonal and communication skills and creates a responsive and productive working relationship with students, teachers, and other staff through clear and concise communication. An ELD Aide encourages initiative and a sense of responsibility for learning in multilingual learners.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School Diploma/GED
2. English language proficiency
3. Cultural competencies
4. Bilingual preferred/desired
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
POSITION GOAL: Provide individualized support to address language needs in addition to assisting ESL teachers with providing support to classroom teachers to ensure multilingual learners have appropriate and equitable access to all material and assessments withing the school curriculum.
REPORTS TO: Certified ESL teachers, building principals, and supervisor of ELD Department.
SUPERVISES: Responsible for supervising students under the direction of a certified ESL teacher and/or building administrator.
PERFROMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist instructional personnel in the implementation of individual educational plans for students identified as multilingual learners.
- Tutor individuals and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities.
- Provide instructional push-in and pull-out intervention support.
- Assist students in the development of appropriate cultural/social behaviors.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to the special instructional requirements of students.
- Provide empathetic understanding of cultural experiences to assist students with bilingual/ bicultural needs.
- Use inquiry, varied types of questions, and probes to elicit student responses at various cognitive levels.
- Provide time and attention equitably among all students while circulating freely and spontaneously around the classroom.
- Reflect an attitude that values diversity and put effort toward increasing cultural competency.
- Employ strategies that motivate, encourage and promote high performance in all students.
- Exhibit aide/student interactions that reflect politeness, warmth, praise, and cooperation.
- Perform duties assigned by the ESL teacher(s), or ELD supervisor in accordance with board policy.
